Sri Lanka: Vanni Emergency OCHA Situation Report No. 5

- The ERC, Mr. John Holmes, briefed the members of the Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka on 30 April 2009.

- The Japanese Special Peace Envoy to Sri Lanka, Mr. Yashushi Akashi, visited Vavuniya and met with Government authorities on 1 May.

- The Sri Lankan Security Forces Commander in Jaffna announced on 1 May that organizations with access to Vavuniya IDP camps had also been granted access to Jaffna camps.

- On 2 May, the Competent Authority (CA) in Vavuniya, appointed by the Government to coordinate all relief efforts on behalf displaced civilians, has announced the arrival of 40,000 people in the next two weeks from the conflict zone.

- The Comite d'Aide Medicale (CAM) received funds from WHO to start mobile clinics in Menik Farm zone 1 and 2. Operations will start on Monday, 4 May.

- The Government has completed the construction of two dispensaries in Menik Farm zone 2 and 3. Read more ...
