Medical Teams International intensifies response to assist civilians in fighting in Sri Lanka

The World Health Organization awarded $250,000 to Medical Teams International yesterday to help increase care to 80,000 people displaced by fighting in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan government asked Medical Teams International to mobilize 20 ambulances and 40 health care workers it has trained to care for those civilians caught in the fighting. A civil war has troubled Sri Lanka for more than 25 years, but recent fighting has trapped civilians in a war zone.

The 40 emergency medical service workers have been trained by Medical Team International staff and volunteers from Oregon and Washington State Emergency Medical Units. "These volunteers are uniquely prepared to help during this crisis because of the training they received after the tsunami in 2005," says Joe DiCarlo, director of international programs for Medical Teams International.
