As the crisis in the North of Sri Lanka continues, Handicap International has reinforced its provision of care for people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations in displaced persons' camps. The association is to set up an emergency unit of Sri Lankan rehabilitation workers, made available by the Ministry of Health.
Every day, several thousands of people arrive from the combat zones having undertaken chaotic journeys over several days. The flow is constant. Members of the same family often arrive separately, sometimes having lost a relative on the way or having been separated in their flight. Injured men, women and children of all ages continue to arrive in large numbers. There are still many amputees among them, or people who require rapid amputation as a result of their injuries.
In order to keep pace with the situation, Handicap International has stepped up its response. The association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is to set up an emergency unit of Sri Lankan rehabilitation workers in hospitals and transit camps with the aim of improving the care management of the injured.
