India gives more relief

Indian High Commissioner Alok Prasad yesterday handed over to the UN Resident Representative Neil Buhne, the fourth consignment of relief goods from India meant for the IDP population in northern Sri Lanka. The 600-ton consignment, which arrived in Colombo on August 8 and valued at over USD 3 million is a symbol of India's continuing concern for the welfare of the IDPs, said a press release issued by the Indian High Commission yesterday.

The consignment consists of more than 600,000 packages of grocery items, utensils, plastic mats, clothing materials including children's clothing, footwear, jerry cans and personal hygiene items. Almost all the items in the consignment are sufficient to cover the needs of 80,000 families, i.e. nearly the entire IDP population in the north. Read more ...

Northern development: NGOs pledge to cooperate

President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a meeting with the NGO fraternity at Temple Trees on Thursday, prevailed upon them that they were welcome to play a supplementary role to that of the Government when it comes to relief and rehabilitation efforts in the north.

During discussions, the President noted that the Government was prepared to support these organizations if they were prepared to work within the set framework by the authorities.

While acknowledging their contribution to the relief efforts so far, the President stressed that the Government was prepared to back these organizations if they come up with specific target oriented plans and necessary funding to carry out projects, which would benefit the displaced people.

President Rajapaksa also stressed that his prime intention of seeking support from all relevant sectors was to help people achieve better and equal living standards through out the country sans any geographical, religious or ethnic differences.

The President also paid special attention to the problems faced by these NGOs and regarding specific areas in which their support was needed.

While commending the Government’s present relief efforts in the north, NGO representatives prevailed upon the President that they could contribute in a significant way to supplement the relief/rehabilitation effort.

Admitting that some mistakes had taken place during their earlier efforts in the region, the NGO representatives stressed that they were prepared to carry forward the work while rectifying earlier mistakes. Read more ...

Development and Peace contributes $600,000 to Sri Lanka relief

Development and Peace is committing funds to emergency relief for the 170,000 Sri Lankan Tamils that have left the conflicted province of Vanni in Northern Sri Lanka to settle in Government-run camps.

Partner Caritas Sri Lanka has access to all the camps and is currently providing cooked meals for 10,000 newly-arrived families, basic medical services through 13 mobile clinics, school and play materials and trauma counseling.

"The information that we are receiving from Sri Lanka is quite worrisome", says Debbie Bucher, Asia Program Officer at Development and Peace. "Hundreds of thousands of people are completely stranded and have been traumatized by months of intense violence. Many have seen their family members killed and are sitting in the camps with no belongings and little hope."

Development and Peace has already sent $ 250,000 to Caritas Sri Lanka and will shortly be sending another $ 350,000. Read more ...
