The government is planning to resettle as many internally displaced persons as possible in the area west of the A9 before tackling resettlement in the Vanni east. The army is of the opinion that all its efforts should be directed at clearing the western part of the Vanni in keeping with the original plan, though some have called for simultaneous resettlement of the displaced on both sides of the A9.
Northern Province Governor Major General (retd) G. A. Chandrasiri yesterday said that the army and five demining agencies had been engaged in mine clearing operations in the Yodawewa area.
In a brief interview with The Island, the former Jaffna Security Forces Commander said the recent deployment of ten mine clearing machines bought from Slovakia and Croatia would help them clear the area (approximately 7,000 acres) north of Yodawewa by the third week of October. Read more ...

Impending Disaster for the IDPs if they are released

On the fifteenth of August, at the the hallowed feast of Madhu, the Right Reverend Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith called for the "the immediate release of the IDPs". Top officials of the US government, probably still following the briefings of Robert Blake, have stated that "Release from confinement is an issue that friends of Sri Lanka continue to raise." The Island Editorial on the 21st of August has reviewed some of these calls to release the IDPs, and stated some of the ground realities in very clear terms.
The ostensible reason for the new call for the immediate release of the IDPs is that the Menik Farm area is flooded. Additionally, we are told that there is no reason to keep the young and the old in the camps. So, are they suggesting forcible separation of the young and the old from their families? If the Vanni villages are to be reconstructed, surely it is the able bodied who should be released, while the young and the old are retained and cared for in the camps! Read more ...

More ShelterBoxes Sent to Sri Lanka
An additional 200 ShelterBoxes are being sent to Sri Lanka to give emergency shelter to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were forced to leave their homes by the recent fighting in the country.
The aid – due to have arrived in the country on 21 June - will be sent to Menik Farm (Zone 3) in the Vanni region where ShelterBox has already distributed 448 ShelterBoxes. “There is still a great need for emergency shelter in the country,” says SRT member Laura Jepson who returned from the country on 12 June. Lodging being provided for medics in the Vanni
The dearth of lodging facilities for doctors and nurses serving in the Vanni welfare camps was partially settled by the Health Ministry. Two sets of quarters for doctors and nurses were opened by Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva with assistance from the World Health Organization and the State Pharmaceutical Corporation.
A spokesman for the Health Ministry said yesterday (16) that the quarters had been opened in Cettikulam. 48 doctors and 50 nurses could be housed in the two quarters. Five million rupees was provided by the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation for the purchase of furniture.
Two more quarters would be constructed close to the Kadiragamarpura welfare camp for 48 more doctors and 24 paramedics within the next few weeks. Read more ...

Relief for IDPs from Lankan diaspora in USA
The first consignment of relief goods to the IDPs in Vanni from the Sri Lankan diaspora in USA was handed over to the Disaster Relief Services Minister Ameer Ali at his Ministry in Colombo on Tuesday.
As a totally independent voluntary project the relief program for the IDPs also opened a website futuresrilanka.com and their main coordinating centre was located in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan Diaspora in USA had managed to link with a large number of Sri Lankans in every part of the world, project coordinator Priyantha Samarajeewa said. Read more ...

Development and Peace contributes $600,000 to Sri Lanka relief
Development and Peace is committing funds to emergency relief for the 170,000 Sri Lankan Tamils that have left the conflicted province of Vanni in Northern Sri Lanka to settle in Government-run camps.
Partner Caritas Sri Lanka has access to all the camps and is currently providing cooked meals for 10,000 newly-arrived families, basic medical services through 13 mobile clinics, school and play materials and trauma counseling.
"The information that we are receiving from Sri Lanka is quite worrisome", says Debbie Bucher, Asia Program Officer at Development and Peace. "Hundreds of thousands of people are completely stranded and have been traumatized by months of intense violence. Many have seen their family members killed and are sitting in the camps with no belongings and little hope."
Development and Peace has already sent $ 250,000 to Caritas Sri Lanka and will shortly be sending another $ 350,000. Read more ...
