UNICEF has donated ten Gully bowzers to the Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services to be used for improving hygienic facilities at the IDP villages in Vavuniya, Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Rishad Bathiudeen said.
The donation which costs Rs. 50 million was made by the local representative of UNICEF Philip Dumelle.
During the presentation, the local representative was made aware of the measures taken by the Government to facilitate the IDPs by Minister Bathiudeen.
The Minister pointed out that several welfare measures have been implemented to promote facilities to IDPs on the advice and guidance of the President. Source:

New funding for Sri Lanka announced
DFID has today approved a grant of £500,000 to UNICEF for an emergency measles and polio vaccination campaign covering all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Vavuniya as well as the provision of nutritional supplements. This programme will operate out of the emergency health clinics in the IDP camps which DFID funded through the International Office of Migration (IOM) last month. Source:

Toilet crisis in IDP camps: UN report
Only half of the required toilets and one sixth of the entire requirement of bathing spaces are available for the displaced people in Vavuniya camps, a United Nations report said.
While about 6,000 toilets are needed in the camps, only about 3,150 have been constructed and about 2800 need to be set up immediately, the report said. To reduce the ratio from 1:50 to 1:20, nearly 11,500 more toilets will have to be set up later.
Only 200 bathing spaces have been set up though 1,200 are needed. The Sunday Times learns that restrictions by the government on access to these camps have affected the progress of the relief work there. UNICEF supports Sri Lanka's child friendly primary schools
Sri Lanka's Ministry of Education, in partnership with UNICEF, today launched the 'Child Friendly Schools' concept as the official framework to address disparities in quality and access in primary schools in Sri Lanka.
In a presentation to national, provincial and zonal education authorities, along with other key partners, Sri Lanka's Ministry of Education outlined an approach which seeks to improve the quality of education and schools for students, teachers and communities by mainstreaming Child Friendly Schools as the national framework to primary education. As well as the training of principals, teachers, students and their communities, the CFS approach includes school development.
The CFS approach is already operating in more than 1400 primary schools in Sri Lanka. This framework seeks to take it to 10,000 primary schools in Sri Lanka. UNICEF to build toilets for IDPs in Vavuniya
UNICEF will build toilets in the IDP welfare villages in Vavuniya which were recently set up to temporarily settle displaced Tamil civilians from the Wanni, Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Ministry sources said.
Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Rishad Badhiudeen held discussions with officers of UNICEF at his Ministry in regard to sanitation facilities for the IDPs, Ministry Secretary U.L.M. Further urgent humanitarian assistance for Sri Lanka
Following the launch on Monday 4 May of an urgent United Nations appeal for emergency international assistance, Australia will provide a further $10 million in humanitarian assistance to meet the critical needs of civilians adversely affected by the conflict in northern Sri Lanka, particularly those in displaced peoples camps or near the conflict zone.
Australia's contribution will be aimed at key areas for assistance including water, sanitation, shelter, food and health care. It will be provided through United Nations agencies, including UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) and Australian NGOs.
The $10 million will include $4 million for UNICEF, $2.5 million for the WFP, $1.5 million to other UN agencies and $2 million for Australian NGOs. Read more ...

LTTE women, child soldiers to be rehabilitated
There are around 600 women soldiers, 400 child soldiers and a large number of orphaned children among the LTTE members who surrendered to the Sri Lankan armed forces.
The Child Development and Women's Empowerment Ministry will make arrangements to re-integrate them in to the society after rehabilitation, a Child Development and Women's Empowerment Ministry spokesman said.
He said the Ministry will set up four rehabilitation centres for them in Bogawanthalawa, Thalawa, Biyagama and Paranthan to carry out this task.
The Ministry will use six abandoned state schools located in the North Western and North Central Provinces as rehabilitation centres.
UNICEF will support the Ministry to implement this project. Read more ...

UNICEF building learning centers for IDP children in Sri Lanka
United Nations' children agency, UNICEF is building learning centers for the children in the camps for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Northern Sri Lanka.
The UN spokesman for the Secretary-General said at the press briefing today, that two centers known as Temporary Learning Space (TLS) are being built by the UNICEF. One center will be for 550 children from one IDP camp and the other is for 600 children from a separate camp.
According to the UN, the UNICEF and non-governmental organizations will provide water, sanitation and hygiene services for the TLS, as well as stationery, text books and uniforms, while the World Food Programme will provide mid morning meals. Read more ...

Japan provides US$ 4 million emergency grant aid for IDP's in Sri Lanka
The Government of Japan has decided to provide grant aid totalling US$ 4 million (approximately 480 million Rupees) to meet immediate needs of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka through United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Crisis In Sri Lanka: UNICEF Airlifts 50 Tonnes Of Emergency Supplies As Numbers In Urgent Need Swell
UNICEF said that 50 metric tonnes of airlifted emergency relief supplies landed today in Colombo. The supplies will immediately be sent to northern Sri Lanka to meet some of the most urgent needs of more than 100,000 people who have fled fierce fighting over the past week.

The Govt. committed to resettle all IDPs as early as possible
With the experience gained in resettling 187,000 IDPs in the Eastern Province in the post - conflict period, the government is confident of resettling nearly 200,000 IDPs now living in welfare centers in the Wanni as early as possible. The government is committed comprehensively to ensure the well - being of the civilians who have been evacuated, said Mr. Mahinda Samarasinghe Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights addressing a media briefing at the Presidential Secretariat today(24).
The total figure of IDPs as of today is 193,960. Last four days, 105,274 civilians have escaped the no fire zone. 75% of them have been handed over to the Government Agents. 10,880 have been evacuated by the ICRC, Out of them, 4,736 are patients, and 6,144 bystanders. There are 20 sites operating in Vavuniya, 17 sites in Jaffna and 03 in Mannar, the Hon. Minister added.
The government has requested United Nations Agencies, UNCHR the UNICEF NGOs and INGOs to provide tents to provide shelter to IDPs Mr. Basil Rajapakse, Senior Presidential Advisor too has made arrangements with authorities in Dubai and Jordan to provide tents. More ...
