Lights for Kilinochchi in two weeks

Following the installation of a transformer near the Iranamadhu Tank at Kilinochchi electricity to Kilinochchi area will be supplied within the next two weeks, according to `Uthuru Wasanthaya' Programs Project Manager Gratian Muthukuda Arachchi.

He said darkness of the Northern Province will soon be dispelled with light under the Uthuru Wasanthaya program.

The Uthuru Wasanthaya Program's Project Manager, Gratian Muthukuda Arachchi said the entire Northern Province will be provided with electricity within the next two years under the Uthuru Wasanthaya program to re-build the electricity sector ravaged by three decades of the separatist war. The entire project will cost around Rs. 6 billion, which will be borne by the State.

Meanwhile the first transformer was installed last week near the Iranamadhu Tank at Kilinochchi to provide electricity to Kilinochchi area within the next two weeks. Read more ...

Sri Lanka's former rebel capital to light up from July 10th

Sri Lanka government is to light up Kilinochchi, the LTTE rebels' former capital of its de-facto state on July 10th.

The Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) E.M.S.K Edirisinghe said they have already completed the initial steps to provide electricity to Kilinochchi.

As the second step of this project the CEB hopes to provide electricity to recently liberated Mullaitivu city, he added. Read more ...

Sri Lanka to speed up power supply to North

Due to the urgency of the development in the Northern region, Sri Lanka has decided to bypass the normal competitive bidding process and approve the recommendations by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for the expansion of the Vauniya grid substation.

Foreign aid to provide electricity to North and East

The Iran Aid Project, Asian Development Bank, International Co-operative agency and NORAD have granted loans for the provision of projects to provide electricity to the villages in the North and East under the concept of providing electricity to the villages islandwide, the Power and Energy Ministry said.

Aid has been granted already for 75 Rural Electrification projects have completed under the proposed 114 projects in the North and East. By the conflict Affected Area Rehabilitation Project (CAARP) Rs. 932 million, Asian Development Bank 7.6 million US$, NORAD 8 million US$ and International Co-operative agency Million 32 US$ have granted as Aid.
